Brief Overview of Summit County Permits and Codes

Summit County building Department created a permit process is designed to help assure that new building construction meets minimum standards for safeguarding life, health, property, and public welfare. This process includes reviewing plans for compliance with adopted codes, issuing permits which authorize approved work, inspecting construction for compliance with approved plans and adopted codes, and issuing Certificates of Occupancy authorizing a building's use and occupancy.

This information has been prepared to help guide homebuilders through the building permit and inspection process, in Summit County. Becoming familiar with the procedures and requirements will minimize delays in obtaining your permits, prevent unnecessary construction delays, and allow us to more efficiently serve all builders.

PERMITS AND CODES, A BRIEF OVERVIEW

The Summit County Building Inspections Department administers permitting and inspections for all unincorporated areas of Summit County and the towns of Dillon and Montezuma. The adopted codes provide criteria for buildings' design, construction, quality of materials, location, and use. A building permit is required for the following: New building construction; Additions and alterations to an existing building; Repairs to an existing building; Changing the use or occupancy of an existing building; Moving a building; Demolishing a building; and Abating unsafe buildings or structures. Summit County has adopted the following codes: • International Residential Code, 2003 Edition • International Building Code, 2003 Edition • International Mechanical Code, 2003 Edition • International Plumbing Code, 2003 Edition • National Electric Code, 2005 Edition

The Summit County Building Department is located in the County Commons building just south of Frisco on the west side of highway 9. Between the hours of 8:00 to 5:00 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday; 10:00 to 5:00. They can also be reached at 970-668-3170. Wednesdays they are usually in staff meetings.
