FIRE HAZARD MITIGATION
In 1992, Summit County adopted a set of criteria establishing minimum building design and construction standards for the protection of life and property from fire, within the "Urban-Wildland Interface".
These provisions are meant to aid in the prevention and suppression of fires, and lessen the hazards to structures from Wildland fires as well as the hazards to wildlands from structure fires.
All new buildings and additions are assessed against the policy and may be required to incorporate a combination of mitigation methods, into the design and construction of the building.
The complete fire hazard mitigation policy is available as part of the Summit County Amendment Package, and the subdivision fire hazard ratings, which are referenced in the policy, can be found in the Building Department Matrix. Both publications are available at the Building Department.
Effective September 13, 2005 was the creation of a $150 fee to be assessed on projects that require Fire Hazard Mitigation Defensible Space services. This additional fee is allocated to covering program costs and is payable at the time of building permit issuance.
