If passed, House Joint Resolution 1008 would make skiing and snowboarding the official winter sport of Colorado, joiing the list of other state symbols which include the White and Lavender Columbine, the Colorado Blue Spruce, and the Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep.

The idea of skiing and snowboarding as an official winter sport comes as no surprise to local State Representative Christine Scanlan, who is also co-sponoring the resolution.

“Of course skiing and snowboarding are the official winter sports. There is no other winter sport that appeals to Coloradans of all ages and is so much a part of our rich outdoor history,” said Rep. Scanlan.

To see his efforts carried out, Kane and his entire fourth grade class from Dennison Elementary School in Lakewood, visited the capitol to watch the initial vote on the resolution.

The resolution will be voted on in the Senate in the near future, where it is sponsored by Senator Moe Keller (D-Golden). Unlike a bill, resolutions do not require a signature of the Governor before being officially recognized.

So far this season, five people have died in avalanches, one less than the annual average of six. Around the country, 23 people have died since mid-December, surpassing last year’s total and leading to concerns that there could a record number of deaths this winter. Back country snow riders can expect to see avalanches that haven’t slid in a long time. And even regular slides will run bigger and longer than anytime in recent memory. said Ethan Green, director of the Colorado Avalanche Information Center. “The avalanches we’re seeing are getting bigger and bigger. It’s amazing more people haven’t been killed.”

Some experts are especially concerned about a sudden rise in the number of accidents among skiers and snowboarders who use ski resort chairlifts to get to out-of-bounds terrain. Aspen-based forecaster Brian McCall said he expects the danger rating to remain high across most of the state, and said the danger could climb even higher with a warm-up.

Mortgage rates followed other interest rates lower this week, with the average 30 year fixed rate mortgage now at the lowest level in almost four years. Freddie Mac’s weekly report says 30-year fixed rate mortgages averaged 5.48 percent this week, down from 5.69 percent last week. It is the fourth consecutive week mortgage rates have declined.

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. At 10,000 feet, altitude sickness can hit hard and fast- proper hydration will help keep it at bay. Ski with a buddy. Even on a powder day!
Know your limits. Don’t let someone talk you into trying a run beyond your skill level. Space not speed. Slow down, Speed Racer! It’s not NASCAR. Watch your speed and keep your distance when on crowded slopes. Look up hill when trails merge. Seriously? Don’t make us explain. Obey all posted signs. If it’s closed, it’s closed for a reason… even if the snow is whiter on the other side of the fence!

Diet Tips
Do you get cold when skiing? Sometimes what you put in your body is as important as what you put on your body. Body heat comes from what you eat. When you are active, you burn calories, and that produces heat. So what are the best foods to eat to fuel your muscles and to keep you warm? Well, it may not be exactly what you think. Believe it or not, you need some fat in your diet!
Carbohydrates burn quickly and if you rely on them alone you’ll constantly have to refuel. Fats on the other hand, burn long and slow so they last throughout the day.

The muscles you use in skiing require you to replace energy as you burn it to work efficiently. The best way to fuel your system and to stay warm is a balance of 40% Carbs, 30% Protein, and 30% Fat. So at breakfast, go for the pancakes and bacon, not just the plain bagel.
